Current Year   |   Previous Years   |   Workshop Structure
Date: Sat May 4, 2019 @4 - 7 PM
Location: Keep It Moving Yoga & Barre, Douglasville, GA
Name: The Secret of the Yoga Sutra - A Simplified Exposition

The “Yoga Sutra” is more than just a book, written by the sage Patañjali approximately 2000 years ago. It is a vehicle that carries the energy and wisdom of Yoga. It is considered the primal and authoritative text of classical yoga.

Yoga Sutras provides a map, guideline, or path to higher states of consciousness for happiness and freedom from suffering. It defines human consciousness, proposes a progressive system for the unfolding of human consciousness and then also offers a range of modalities for accessing the progressive system. Its definition of yoga as the quieting of mental fluctuation and its structure for spiritual practice has influenced modern yoga in profound ways, but its core system is subtle and widely misunderstood. All Yogic theory emerges from practice and experience. The book “The Yoga-Sūtra“ fully contains and distills the ages of experience of masters, thus its study makes a practitioner’s practice full and complete.

In this workshop, the major portion of time will be spent on the exposition of Yoga Sutra (selected ones), from original Sanskrit text into simplified English for better understanding for all. You will get to know some insights which are not in simple translation. First, you get to know briefly about Patanjali and the importance of Yoga Sutra. You will be introduced to six major Indian Philosophies (Sad Darshana) and major approaches to yoga. Some important Sutras will cover the following – What is yoga as per Patanjali, understanding the dynamics of mind, what causes us to suffer, how to do practice, type of practices, the obstacles on the path of yoga practice and how to overcome them and most importantly how to deal with people in our life. Further, you will be guided into practices which will be derived from those Yoga sutras.

Note: This workshop is open to all, having prior experience of yoga is preferred.

Name: Yoga for Life - Yoga & Ayurveda

It is an ancient understanding that the qualities of your life are driven by the daily choices you make, no matter how small they are,  you are affected by everything including food, lifestyle, and environment. Ayurveda is considered the oldest wellness system and sister science of yoga from ancient India. Ayuh means life and Veda means knowledge. The knowledge deals with the nature, scope, and purpose of life. It is an art of daily living and offers a profound understanding of each person's unique body.

In this workshop, you will get to understand the relationship of yoga with Ayurveda, the journey of Consciousness into the matter - the relationship of three gunas with five elements of nature and the doshas which gives every person a unique constitution. As long as you stay close to your natural constitution you stay healthy - physically, mentally and emotionally. You will learn how to apply this ancient knowledge of Ayurveda into your life to align with laws of nature and nurture the foundation of a healthy, happy, balanced & stable life.

Understanding and finding your own unique constitution will help you demystify the appropriate food, lifestyle, environment, work, and yoga practice that is more suitable for your balanced healthy life, as one size don’t fit all. You will come to understand what the primary motivators are for your choices. These choices increase your vital energy and are sustainable and healthy on a daily basis. Sometimes what feels good in the moment is not necessarily healthy or good for your wellbeing in the long run. You will be introduced to a recommended Daily Routine for a healthy life (Dinacharya) and Ayurveda Herbs/Remedies for Common issues.

Name: The Secrets of Classical Pranayama - The Science of Breath

Pranayama, the science of breath, is considered to be yoga’s most accessible, yet transformative practice. Learn the secrets to refining and mastering your breath. Through theory and practice, you'll experience the power of the sacred science of breath and discover how & when the breath can be used to still the mind, dissolve the unconscious, and attract the forces of happiness and success.

Conscious breathing is by far the most powerful way of accessing deep peace and personal transformation. The power of breath lies in its simplicity and universal accessibility. Breath is the conscious bridge between our mind and body and crossing this bridge with intention can lead us to deep understanding and profound change.

The yogic theory states that Pranayama is twenty times more beneficial than Yogic physical (asana) postures. However, in the practice of Yoga, the importance of Pranayama is often minimalized and ignored due to lack of awareness. These breathing techniques can be easily incorporated into your physical (asana) practice to deepen the experience.
